Welcome, UT Southwestern Austin Programs!

The UT Southwestern Library is happy to welcome its new faculty and residents from the Seton Family of Hospitals, located throughout Central Texas. The University of Texas System made its formal announcement about this collaboration on October 12, 2009.
In an effort to assist with the transition, the Library has created a Library Orientation for UT Southwestern Austin Programs Affiliates Web page.
With a UT Southwestern affiliation, access is available to our electronic journals from off-campus through EZProxy when using the Library’s Ejournals A-Z list.
EZProxy is the best way for UT Southwestern Austin Programs residents to access the Library’s ejournals remotely. EZProxy does not require users to download software or change their browser’s proxy settings. The EZProxy login screen appears automatically when you click on an ejournal from the Ejournals A-Z list, and you enter your UT Southwestern ID and password. UT Southwestern IDs and passwords will be distributed to residents via the Seton GME office.
In addition, other UT Southwestern Austin Programs affiliates who do not have Virtual Private Network (VPN) may also use EZProxy for remote ejournal access through the Ejournals A-Z list. (The remainder of the Library’s electronic resources, such as databases, may only be accessed from off-campus via VPN.) On-campus users and those using VPN from off-campus will continue to access ejournals in the usual way.
You are invited to view the EZProxy tutorial on the Library’s Web site.
For any questions, please contact us by email, phone (214-648-2001), live chat (during regular business hours), or Web site form from the Library’s Home page.

Go Green! Choose Double-Sided Printing

To reduce paper usage and promote a green environment, the Library has implemented double-sided printing as the default for Library printers.
Printer settings may be changed to single-sided. Please ask at the Information Desk for assistance.
This new effort to encourage environmental responsibility joins other efforts the Library has adopted. The increase in electronic books and journals reduces paper consumption and transportation pollution incurred from shipping of printed materials. Paper recycling is available and always encouraged.

Crunch your data at the Library with SAS

The Library has numerous resources to assist you with managing your statistical data.
SAS (Statistical Analysis Software) is a software system used for data management and basic statistical procedures. SAS 9.2 is available on five computers at the South Campus (main) Library, and – for those who need access 24/7 – SAS 9.2 is also installed on three labeled computers at the North Campus Branch Library.
If you need help with SAS, the SAS Guide on the Library Web site collects many resources about SAS into a single list for your convenience. The guide links to electronic and print books, as well as Web resources.
The guide also links to the online version of the short course of Alan Elliott’s Introduction to SAS offered by the Division of Biostatistics. The South Campus Library has two copies of the course workbook, Research Analysis using SAS for Windows. The call number is QA 276.4 E451 2009; one copy is in the regular book collection, and the other copy is on Academic Reserve at the Information Desk.
Another statistical software program, SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences), is also available at the South Campus Library. The SPSS Guide can provide you with basic assistance.
If you need additional assistance with SPSS or SAS, please contact the Division of Biostatistics at 214-648-3681 for technical support.

Library launches delivery service

The Library Intra-Campus Delivery Service (LIDS) is a new service providing free delivery of Library materials to UT Southwestern faculty and staff offices on campus. Items for delivery include:

  • Books owned by the Library that are eligible for check-out
  • Books, journals articles, etc. requested on InterLibrary Loan (ILL) from another library

To request delivery via LIDS:

  • Click on InterLibrary Loan (ILLiad), which is located on the left sidebar under “LIbrary Services” on the Library Web site.
  • Enter your ILLiad username and password.
  • On the next page, click on “New Request.”
  • Enter the appropriate information.
  • At the “How would you like us to deliver this item?” box, select “Hand Delivery” from the drop-down menu.

Some tips:

  • A Library card is required for access to ILLiad.
  • Students and residents/fellows are not eligible for delivery service.
  • If a book, article, etc. must be obtained from another library, there is a $3.50 charge for regular service and $15.00 for rush service.
  • Faculty or staff who only want a book if it is in the Library collection must put “DO NOT BORROW” in the “Notes” field of the request. (To determine if a book is in the Library collection, check the Library’s catalog for print books as well as the Electronic Books page.)
  • Enter the room number for delivery in the “Notes” field. If no room number is given, staff will call to verify the location.
  • A signature is required upon delivery. If no one is available to sign, the package will be returned to the Library and delivery will be attempted the next day.

For more information on LIDS, contact Donna Terlisner by email or by calling 214-648-2002.

Library invites suggestions, comments, questions

Do you have suggestions, comments, or questions about the Library? Let us know by using the Tell Us What You Think (TUWYT) page on the Library Web site (find it under the “Get Help/Ask Us” link on the left sidebar).
We’ll post replies on the TUWYT page. If you provide contact information, you’ll receive a personal response. TUWYT operates in blog format, so further comments can be made on the Library’s reply. Suggestions and comments received on paper suggestion forms will be posted on TUWYT page as well. A link to the TUWYT policies can be found on the TUWYT page.
If you have questions about how to find information, rather than about the Library itself, please fill out the Ask a Librarian form on the Web site to send a query directly to our research librarians. For technical questions or problems, use the Contact Us form.
