Library confirms EZProxy phishing scam

Some university members have recently received an email with “Off-Campus Access” in the subject line that claims to be from the Library and notifies them that their “off-campus access to electronic resources is expiring soon”. (See image below.) Please note: This is **NOT** a legitimate email; it is a “spear phishing” scam, which is a targeted attack focusing on institutions like UT Southwestern that often use identifying information (like the actual name of the Information Security Officer of the institution or specific information about you) to create trust. This email should be deleted.

This is a reminder that the UT Southwestern Health Sciences Digital Library and Learning Center will:

  • Never ask for a user ID or password
  • Never notify users to update their account information via email

Here are some security tips directly from UT Southwestern Information Resources:

  • Don’t click on links in emails from people you don’t know. You can move your mouse over links to view the true destination. If you don’t recognize the website, don’t click on the link.
  • If you don’t recognize the sender of the email and/or the account is not from a UT Southwestern account, delete the message. Think before your act.
  • Be wary of “official” emails that contain grammatical errors or spelling mistakes.
  • Be cautious about opening any attachment or downloading any files from any email you receive, regardless of who sent them.
  • Be suspicious of any email with urgent requests for personal financial or sensitive information. Legitimate companies do not ask for this type of information via email.
  • UT Southwestern Medical Center Information Resources will never ask for a username and password in an email.

If you are unsure about the legitimacy of an email, contact the IR Service Desk or your departmental support. Forward spam or phishing emails to spamreport@utsouthwestern.edu.

EZProxy authentication changes to UpToDate

UpToDate logoStarting November 4, 2014, UpToDate users logging in from off-campus via EZProxy will experience a minor change, which has been mandated by the database vendor.

After logging in through EZProxy, users will be presented with an intermediary page in UpToDate that includes options to either login using an existing personal account or register for a new account. Personal accounts will be linked with users’ UT Southwestern logins, and registered users will be able to bypass the intermediary page on subsequent logins.

Users without a personal account will be able continue to perform searches as usual but will be presented with the intermediary page upon each login. The search box will be located on the top left corner instead of the center of the page.

Access from on-campus or via Juniper VPN will remain the same.

One of the major advantages of establishing a personal account is that the user will receive 0.5 continuing medical education (CME) credit upon completion of each search.

Please contact libWebmaster@utsouthwestern.edu for further questions or concerns.

Access UpToDate anywhere

UpToDate is now available for off-campus access via EZProxy with a UT Southwestern username and password or a Parkland username and password for UT Southwestern affiliated residents. VPN is also an option for UT Southwestern employees outside of non-university hospitals. Previously, UpToDate could only be accessed from on-campus workstations and UTWPA2 Wi-Fi network.
To access UpToDate remotely, go to the Library’s web site. The “Quick Links” section in the left-hand corner provides the easiest direct link to the resource. You will be prompted to log in to EZ Proxy at that time.
For troubleshooting information about EZProxy, VPN, and accessing Library resources off campus, go to the Library’s Off Campus Access page.

EZProxy or VPN: Choose the best way to access your Library resources

The Library now offers two ways to access electronic resources from off-campus: EZProxy and Juniper VPN (Virtual Private Networking).
EZProxy is a fast, easy, web-based way to access Library resources. In the past, EZProxy could only be used to access electronic journals, but as of March 1, 2010, it can be used to access all Library electronic resources (ejournals, ebooks, databases, etc.), with the exception of UpToDate.
Juniper VPN provides access to UT Southwestern resources through either a secure web gateway (for web resources only) or a client download (for a more secure connection to the UT Southwestern network). With Juniper VPN, users may access Library resources as well as other UT Southwestern and departmental resources.
To understand the differences between VPN and EZProxy, see the chart below:

Information Resources releases new secure wireless network

Utwpa2 is the new secure wireless network released by Information Resources . In contrast to the older wireless access method, logging into VPN to access the Internet and campus resources is not required with utwpa2 after connecting to the network. This is a single step with utwpa2, accomplished at logon.
The creation of a login profile or SSID is necessary to use utwpa2. Just as with VPN, a valid UT Southwestern user name and password are necessary to logon. Instructions can be found on Information Resources’s internal Web site about how to create a SSID for utwpa2 . The Library will also be able to provide some assistance to clients who may need help setting up a utwpa2 SSID.
To avoid redundancy, Information Resources (IR) plans to decommission the older wireless network. Tentatively, this is scheduled to occur by the end of August 2009. A final decision on the exact date has not been made, but IR will post an announcement when it is available.
More information about the transition to utwpa2 can be found on the IR Website.
Information Resources can be contacted by calling (214) 648-7600 or by e-mailing IRCALLCENTER@UTSouthwestern.edu
