EZProxy simplifies remote ejournal access for Parkland residents & others

Parkland residents who also have UT Southwestern affiliation can access electronic journals from off-campus through EZProxy when using the Library’s Ejournals A-Z list. For Parkland residents, EZ Proxy is the only way to access the Library’s ejournals remotely.
In addition, UT Southwestern employees who do not have Virtual Private Network (VPN) may also use EZProxy for remote ejournal access through the Ejournals A-Z list. (The remainder of the Library’s electronic resources, such as databases, may only be accessed from off-campus via VPN.) On-campus users and those using VPN from off-campus will continue to access ejournals in the usual way.
EZProxy does not require users to download software of to change their browser’s proxy settings. The EZProxy login screen appears automatically when you click on an ejournal from the Ejournals A-Z list.
You are invited to view the EZProxy tutorial on the Library’s Web site.
At the EZProxy login screen, Parkland residents enter their Novell login user name and password. Residents who do not know their Novell user name and password should contact the Parkland Help Desk at x25999, or from off-site, 214-590-5999.
UT Southwestern employees who do not use VPN should login with their UT Southwestern ID and password.
Parkland residents must have both a UT Southwestern affiliation and a Parkland ID to use EZ Proxy. Parkland employees without a UT Southwestern affiliation will not be able to access journals via EZProxy. Also, residents who are at Children’s Medical Center, VA Medical Center, or other off-campus locations cannot use EZProxy for remote access, unless they also have a UT Southwestern ID and password.

"Find it!" icon explained

The “Find it @ Library — UT Southwestern” icon provides direct access to journal articles from selected databases.

By clicking on the icon, you are linked directly to the full text of the article, if possible, or provided with three other options for obtaining the article:

  • Search the Library’s Ejournals A to Z List of electronic journals (to confirm whether we have the needed journal issue online)
  • Search the Library Catalog (especially for articles in older journals available only in print)
  • Request article through Interlibrary Loan (ILLIAD) (for articles the Library does not own)

For more information on the “Find it!” icon, go to the Find it! UTSW Library FAQ page on the Library Web site.

Library's electronic journals cover broad subject spectrum

The core of the Library’s electronic journal (ejournal) collection covers the medical and life sciences, but many non-medical ejournals are in the collection as well. They are received as part of ejournal packages that include non-medical titles along with medical ones. Most offer full-text access to published articles.
As a result, the campus community has access to ejournals covering such diverse topics as:

  • Business
  • Computer science
  • Education
  • General interest
  • Human resources management
  • Marketing & public relations
  • Sports & recreation

To check whether an ejournal of interest to you is available from the Library, use the Electronic Journals A to Z list on the Library Web site. If the journal is owned, you can link directly to the full text of the articles.
Among the non-medical journals available are:

  • Adult Education Quarterly
  • Computational Statistics & Data Analysis
  • Computer Aided Design
  • Consumer Reports
  • Harvard Business Review
  • Higher Education
  • Journal of Human Resources
  • PC World
  • Public Relations Quarterly
  • Runner’s World

PsychiatryOnline offers practice guidelines, books, journals, and more

PsychiatryOnline—from American Psychiatric Press, Inc. (APPI), a subsidiary of the American Psychiatric Association—gives access to a wealth of information:

  • American Psychiatric Association practice guidelines (evidence-based recommendations for the assessment and treatment of psychiatric disorders)
  • Textbooks published by APPI, including the Diagnostic & Statistical (DSM) Manuals
  • Journals published by APPI
  • Clinical and research news
  • “Book of the Month”: Access to a free PDF of a different APPI book every month
  • PDA ebook library

Handy features of the site allow you to:

  • Create a free personal account to store images, bookmarks, and searches by using the “My PsychiatryOnline” link (visible only when accessing through the Library Web site) on the home page.
  • Save an image from a PsychiatryOnline book to your personal “My PsychiatryOnline” account by using the “image clipping” function.
  • Use an “images only” search option to find images tagged with your search term.

To locate, type “PsychiatryOnline” in the Library Web site “search” box. If you have questions, call 214-648-2003 or use the Ask a Librarian page on the Library Web site.

Google Scholar now links to Library ejournals

Now when you search Google Scholar from a computer on campus (or remotely using Virtual Private Network/VPN) and find articles published in electronic journals owned by the Library, you can link to full text directly from Google Scholar! Just click on the “Find it!@Library” link.
Normally, this link will take you directly to the full-text article. However, due to imperfections in the linking process, it may take you to a screen with the message, “No direct link to this article found; try the full text link(s) below.” The links listed will normally include:

For more information, see the Find it!@Library FAQ page on the Library Web site. If you have questions, contact Jeff Perkins by email or by phone at 214-648-2004.

Another Way to Get That Article!

When you are searching in Ovid or EBSCOHost or Health Reference Center, you can access the Library’s Linking Options page using such links as Remote Link, Full-text at UT Southwestern and Click for SFX Services. This Linking Options page will provide links to the full-text article, if it is available.

This Linking Options page now offers you the choice of requesting the article through Interlibrary Loan using the Library’s ILLiad system. This link will not only take you to the ILLiad site, but, after you log in, it will fill out the request form for you! All you have to do is verify the information, select a desired delivery option and submit the form. The ILLiad link does require a separate username and password. To get one, please register here.
