Try VisualDx for visual diagnostic decision support

VisualDx is an image-based, clinical, diagnostic decision support system with more than 16,000 images of over 900 diseases, drug reactions, and infections. (Available to UT Southwestern affiliates only.) For an introduction, try the VisualDX 4-minute demonstration.
VisualDX is organized to match the way a doctor thinks about symptons and diagnosis by presenting multiple images of each disease and showing the condition in different stages and in people of different ages and skin types. The clinician enters patient symptoms and other clinical findings, such as:

  • Lesion type
  • Location on body
  • Medical history
  • Medication taken

With each entry, the system builds and refines the differential, never eliminating a diagnostic possibility but ranking each one by relevance, and displays images and key clinical information for a quick side-by-side comparison to the patient.
If you try VisualDx, please email your impressions to Mori Lou Higa, Manager, Library Collection Development.

Free literature searches for affiliated users

Are you researching a topic? Need a thorough search of the literature? Our research librarians will compile a bibliography for you on the topic of your choice, free of charge. This service is available to UT Southwestern students and employees (including those at the University Hospitals), as well as staff of Parkland Health & Hospital System and Children’s Medical Center.
To request a search, call 214-648-2003 or go to the Request a Literature Search page on the Library Web site.

Save time using information guides by subject

The Library Web site has subject guides that can speed your research! Go to the Resources by Subject page on the Web site to see links to almost 200 subject searches. All Web sites included in those searches have been reviewed and evaluated by Library staff.
Most of the searches list Web sites only. However, about 25 percent of them cover their subjects in more depth and include other resources, such as books and journals. These have the word “Guide” in their title.
While most subjects are biomedical, a few focus on information formats. If you want listings of resources by format, consider the following guides:

High-demand electronic books purchased

The Library recently purchased five high-demand electronic books, now available on the
Library Web site (click on Electronic Books). Unlimited use by UT Southwestern affiliates is permitted. The five are:

These purchases were in response to comments and suggestions from faculty. If you have questions or suggestions for additional titles, email Jon Crossno, Library Collection Development.

Basic Multimedia Spanish and English translator: Polyglot 3.0

Polyglot 3.0 is a basic multimedia medical Spanish and English translator, useful for those learning medical terminology in Spanish or English. Words, phrases, and basic conversations can be searched. You can select a “phrase book” to see a display of bilingual phrases in that category. Some of the phrase books include:

  • General – Medications
  • Emergency Department – Adult Triage
  • Mother-Baby Care Unit – Patient Care
  • Prenatal – Equipment in the Clinic

Sound files are available for both languages. Although the default search is English, this can be changed to Spanish. Everything else on the page then appears in Spanish, not just the desired search terms – an extra benefit for those learning Spanish.
Find Polyglot 3.0 using the “Search” box on the Library Web site. Polyglot 3.0 was conceived and originally programmed by William T. Lawson, and produced by the Duke AHEC Program, Duke University Medical Center.
