MD Consult brings convenient, free on-line training in November

MD Consult is offering free, on-line afternoon sessions throughout the month of November. These brief (under 30 minutes) sessions are perfect for new users and as “refresher courses” for others. Registration at the MD Consult Web site is required.
MD Consult is a clinical reference tool containing a comprehensive collection of information resources:

  • Full-text of 50 leading medical textbooks
  • Full-text articles from 80 premier health and life science journals and Clinics of North America
  • Extensive drug information provided by Gold Standard

MD Consult has the advantage of being accessible directly from off-campus, as well as on-campus, once the user has established a user name and password. (This feature is available only to UT Southwestern affiliates.) Most other Library electronic resources can be accessed off campus only via Virtual Private Network (VPN).
Find MD Consult on the Library’s Home Page by using the “Quick Links” drop-down menu (on the side bar). If you have questions about MD Consult, contact Emily Patridge by email or by phone at 214-648-9011.

Library launches Mobile Web site

The UT Southwestern Library is happy to announce the launch of its mobile Web site. It is the first step in making Library services and resources available over the Internet to mobile devices such as iPhones, Blackberries, and Web-enabled hand-held devices. The initial version will include links to hours, directions, research support and other information about Library resources.
The mobile device website can be accessed at http://www4.utsouthwestern.edu/library/mobile/ or on most mobile phones you will be redirected to it from the Library’s Web site.
After looking at the site, please fill out our feedback survey so we can find out what you would like to see next on the UT Southwestern Library mobile site.

PubMed receives a new look

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) has launched a redesign of PubMed. PubMed is NLM’s database of articles in the medical and life sciences, with links to full text when accessed via the Library Web site. The new streamlined interface is designed for ease of use. A number of changes will be made to Advanced Search, My NCBI, and format display options, but search processing -the way PubMed processes a search – will not change. All functionality will remain.
Saved searches and links that were created in the current interface will be preserved in the new design. No changes will be necessary to URLs that you have saved (PubMed brochures, etc.).

Library participates in Oct. 3rd "Breakthroughs in Medicine" forum

Flu shots, health screenings, food and giveaways were available. The free event took place at the Hilton Lincoln Center on IH 635 at the Dallas North Tollway.
The event included informational sessions on heart disease prevention, breakthroughs in breast cancer, ending back pain and the link between diet and cancer. The half-day event was free and open to the public.
Participating physicians included:

  • Rod Rohrich and Jeffrey M. Kenkel (Plastic Surgery)
  • Kevin Gill (Spine Center)
  • Phil Evans and Marilyn Leitch (Center for Breast Care)
  • Claus Roehrborn (Urology)
  • James McCulley (Opthamology)
  • Amit Khera (Preventive Cardiology)

2200+ new electronic books available

The Library recently purchased several large collections of electronic books (ebooks) from two primary publishers of medicine and science materials: Elsevier and Springer.
Over 2,000 Springer ebooks are available in the following subjects:

  • Biochemical & Life Sciences, published from 2008 through 2009
  • Chemistry & Material Sciences, published from 2006 through 2009
  • Medicine, published from 2007 through 2009

Over 200 Elsevier ebooks published from 2007 through 2009 are available in the following subjects:

  • Biochemistry, Genetics, & Molecular Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Immunology & Microbiology
  • Medicine & Dentistry
  • Neuroscience
  • Pharmacology, Toxicology, and Pharmaceutical Science
  • Psychology

To locate ebooks, go the Ejournals A to Z list (through the “Quick Links” list on the Library’s Web site) and search for your topic or keyword. If an ebook title is available, then it will appear in the list with either “ScienceDirect eBooks” or “Springer eBooks” for the full-text link. Access via Ejournals A to Z permits EZproxy users to access the material from off-campus. Other off-campus users should use VPN to view the full text.
For UT Southwestern affiliates, access is also available (via the Library Web site) through the publishers’ online content platforms: Elsevier’s ScienceDirect and Springer’s SpringerLink. Both platforms permit searching all available online content (books and journals) at once to obtain relevant information.

Information Resources releases new secure wireless network

Utwpa2 is the new secure wireless network released by Information Resources . In contrast to the older wireless access method, logging into VPN to access the Internet and campus resources is not required with utwpa2 after connecting to the network. This is a single step with utwpa2, accomplished at logon.
The creation of a login profile or SSID is necessary to use utwpa2. Just as with VPN, a valid UT Southwestern user name and password are necessary to logon. Instructions can be found on Information Resources’s internal Web site about how to create a SSID for utwpa2 . The Library will also be able to provide some assistance to clients who may need help setting up a utwpa2 SSID.
To avoid redundancy, Information Resources (IR) plans to decommission the older wireless network. Tentatively, this is scheduled to occur by the end of August 2009. A final decision on the exact date has not been made, but IR will post an announcement when it is available.
More information about the transition to utwpa2 can be found on the IR Website.
Information Resources can be contacted by calling (214) 648-7600 or by e-mailing IRCALLCENTER@UTSouthwestern.edu

What is the Copyright Clearance Center License?

The University of Texas System campuses have adopted the Copyright Clearance Center’s Annual Academic License (CCC Annual) for the academic year 2009-2010.
Each campus currently relies on a combination of library-licensed materials, materials whose owners make them available freely over the Internet, and fair use.
The CCC Annual adds to that body of materials (and the rights to use them) the ability to copy and distribute materials owned by the Annual’s publisher participants, through online course management systems such as Blackboard, through electronic reserve systems in campus libraries, and through electronic and paper coursepacks, created both on and off campus.
This agreement covers the rights to make copies for distribution to students through course management systems, e-reserves, and coursepacks, for which permissions would normally be required. It does not cover Interlibrary Loan, or emailing an article to a colleague or client off campus. Those rights will continue to be addressed in the license agreements we sign with each of our publishers.
The University of Texas Office of General Council has created a Web site that addresses the Copyright Clearance Center Annual License, including a copy of their formal presentation, the most recent publishers list, an FAQ section, and a copy of the license itself.
