Science of Synthesis provides synthetic chemistry methods

Science of Synthesis, available on the Library Web site, is a critical digest of synthetic methods in organic and organometallic chemistry. It is based on the book of the same name, the 5th edition of a famous text often referred to as “Houben-Weyl” (the names of the original authors), and it contains:

  • Synthesis schemes and methods for molecular transformations
  • Experimental procedures for each method
  • Access to all volumes of Houben-Weyl Methods of Molecular Transformation, its predecessor title
  • Ability to search by structure and keyword
  • Browsable hierarchical table of contents
  • Other features listed on the site’s welcome page

To access this resource, type “Science of Synthesis” in the search box on the Library Web site. System requirements are explained in a link from the site’s welcome page.

Ejournals A-Z now includes Ebooks

The Ejournals A-Z feature on the Library Web site links you to the Library’s electronic journals. Now the Ejournals A-Z list can also link you to about 800 electronic books (Ebooks) contained in the following information collections:

An additional 47,000 Ebooks on a wide variety of topics (not just biomedical) are available in the NetLibrary collection, but cannot be listed in Ejournals A-Z for technical reasons. Likewise, the 80 books in STAT!Ref can most conveniently be located by searching the Electronic Books page.
If you have questions about access to the Library’s electronic books or journals, use the Ask A Librarian page on the Library Web site.

Try VisualDx for visual diagnostic decision support

VisualDx is an image-based, clinical, diagnostic decision support system with more than 16,000 images of over 900 diseases, drug reactions, and infections. (Available to UT Southwestern affiliates only.) For an introduction, try the VisualDX 4-minute demonstration.
VisualDX is organized to match the way a doctor thinks about symptons and diagnosis by presenting multiple images of each disease and showing the condition in different stages and in people of different ages and skin types. The clinician enters patient symptoms and other clinical findings, such as:

  • Lesion type
  • Location on body
  • Medical history
  • Medication taken

With each entry, the system builds and refines the differential, never eliminating a diagnostic possibility but ranking each one by relevance, and displays images and key clinical information for a quick side-by-side comparison to the patient.
If you try VisualDx, please email your impressions to Mori Lou Higa, Manager, Library Collection Development.
