SciFinder officially a Web only resource

As of September 7, 2010, SciFinder is officially a Web only resource. All connection attempts to the old client software program will result in busy signals.
A complete overview of SciFinder Web features can be found on the SciFinder Overview page.
To register for the SciFinder Web version, go to the SciFinder Web Registration page. You will need a GroupWise address ending in “@utsouthwestern.edu”. Additional information is located on the Library’s SciFinder page. Once you have registered, log into SciFinder from the Library SciFinder page, which may be accessed by clicking on the “Quick Links” on the left sidebar of the Library home page.

UT Southwestern Medical Center Library receives two awards, secures funding for archival and outreach projects

We do more than teach about grants and funding at the Library. We also secure them for our own projects. The UT Southwestern Medical Center Library has recently secured two awards from the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, South Central Region (NN/LM SCR) for special projects.
The first is a $25,000 Historical Preservation and Digitization Award. This money will be used to purchase equipment to complete a project entitled “Dallas Medical History: 1890-1975”. The project involves scanning 500 photos from our collection that will be made available online, plus creating a special web exhibit of the 50 most important photos.
The second is a $6,500 Express Outreach Grant to purchase equipment to assist with consumer health community outreach. Outreach librarians and Library staff will demonstrate resources and provide information assistance at the Health Professions Recruitment and Exposure Program (HPREP) for minority high school students and their families from the Dallas Independent School District.
These projects have been funded in whole or in part with federal funds from the National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health, Department of Health and Human Services, under Contract No. N01-LM-6-3505 with the Houston Academy of Medicine – Texas Medical Center Library.

What's Find it! @ Library?

This icon provides direct access to journal articles from selected databases:

By clicking on the icon, you are usually linked directly to the full text of the article. You may be provided with three other options for obtaining the article:

Go to Find It! UTSW Library FAQ for more information on the “Find it!” icon.

What's an embargo?

Frustrated because a link in Ejournals A-Z doesn’t take you to the most recent articles?
Explanation: The publisher has placed a restriction on access, called an “embargo period.” This means that the most recent articles are not yet available.* These embargo periods range from three months to a year or more depending on publisher policies.
* If you need the article now, you might be able to obtain this journal article through your Library’s Interlibrary Loan (ILLiad) Service.
Suggestion: Be sure and read availability dates that appear next to the access link for embargo period information. (Put on your glasses to read the fine print!) For example:
Nutrition bulletin

Academic Search Complete 2000 to present (Embargo: 1 year)
CINAHL Plus with Full Text (EBSCO Publishing) 2003 to present (Embargo: 1 year)

Ovid 3.0 brings new look and functions

CLICK HERE TO CONNECT TO OVID
A new OvidSP interface arrived on August 2, 2010, bringing enhancements and a new look. The basics of searching have not changed, but the interface has been redesigned for easier navigation.
To prepare yourself for a new searching experience, take a look at these tutorials:

What are these new features and enhancements? The following is a list of some of the major changes:

  • My Workspace is the best of the new features. It contains My Projects, My Searches & Alerts, My eTOCS, and Install Toolbar. My Workspace allows users to create projects and organize research material, either retrieved through OvidSP or uploaded from another system, into a dedicated work area.
  • My Projects is OvidSP’s resource management and organization tool. Here users can save search results, full text journal articles, images from Journals@Ovid, and book chapters from Books@Ovid. 50 MB of storage is available for storing items external to OvidSP, such as user-uploaded files and user-created citations.
  • Ovid Toolbar is a downloadable browser toolbar that allows users to quickly and easily add resources from other sites outside OvidSP to My Projects folders. These resources include URLs of Internet search results and documents.
  • New Citation Style and Export Options offer more flexibility. Users can now conveniently select their preferred citation export and print format—from MS Word, PDF, and RIS to EndNote and Reference Manager—as well as style, including Ovid, Chicago, AMA, and APA.

Your New Library Catalog is here!

Your Library is proud to announce a new Library Catalog interface, which provides additional, enhanced searching and service capabilities.
The new Library Catalog allows you to:

  • Conduct enhanced searches by:
    • Keyword (e.g., “cancer”, “diabetes”)
    • Phrase (e.g., “Alzheimer’s disease”, “myocardial infarction”)
    • Resource type (e.g., “print”, “electronic”)
  • Quickly renew materials and update personal account information
  • Place holds on checked-out Library materials
  • Use new centralized “Library Services” Catalog location for frequently used Library services, such as Interlibrary Loan, Literature Search Request, and Suggest a Book/Journal
  • To login, go to the Library Catalog and enter your Library User ID (i.e., the bar code on your Library card or the back of your UT Southwestern ID) and Library PIN.
If you have any questions about the new Library Catalog, please visit the Library Catalog FAQ or contact Libwebmaster@utsouthwestern.edu.
