Thousands of training and development books now available through Library Catalog

Books24x7Finding campus training and development resources just got easier! With a click and a campus log-in, you can now access thousands of current training books and modules currently housed in the Academy of Career Enhancement‘s Books 24×7 collection through the Library Catalog.

The Library and Learning Center’s Digital Collections unit has just completed a successful collaborative project with the Office of Human Resources adding more than 21,000 ebook titles and resources. You can continue to utilize ACE’s Professional Development tracking components.

The Health Sciences Digital Library and Learning Center website will be temporarily redirected to the limited function back-up site this Friday, May 1, 2015, from 2 to 4 p.m. while we upgrade our database server. Access to ejournals and ebook holdings — with links to ensure off-campus availability — will be provided on the back-up site.

Subscribing to our journal success: top journal list mirrors Library subscriptions

scivalatozThe SciVal Experts system maintains a list of the top 100 journals that contain publications produced by UT Southwestern authors. The list is compiled using data from the Scopus database, and a link to it has been added to the Health Sciences Digital Library and Learning Center’s Top Ejournals page, which includes the 25 most-used electronic journals at UT Southwestern.

After carefully reviewing both lists of top ejournals, Library staff have determined that the 17 of our most-used titles appear on SciVal’s list. These titles are:

Enhance your research process and promotion with Web of Science training

enx7WebofscienceThe Health Sciences Digital Library and Learning Center will host three Web of Science training sessions on Friday, March 27, 2015, in the South Campus (main) Library’s Informatics Classroom (Room E2.310A). An expert trainer from Web of Science will teach the sessions, which will focus on various resources to enhance and simplify your research process and promotion.

Introducing new Interlibrary Loan service enhancements and web location

ILLiadThe Health Sciences Digital Library and Learning Center has just upgraded its Interlibrary Loan (ILLiad) server to accommodate security and service enhancements.

The ILLiad log-in page is now located at https://illiad.swmed.org. Please update any old internet browser bookmarks linking to the previous ILLiad log-in web page.

 

 

 

VisualDX introduces new mobile app for iPad, iPhone, and Android Devices

VisualDX_febVisualDX has just launched a new mobile-friendly app for clinical decision-making assistance. To use the Library’s campus subscription, complete the following steps to activate the app for on-site and remote mobile access:

  1. Launch VisualDX from your Library’s website and click on the “Get our free app… Learn how” button (center of VisualDx homepage) or the “Get Mobile” link (top right of page).
  2. Create your personal username and password as instructed.
  3. Once you have a username and password, you can download the free VisualDx Mobile app on your mobile device from the iTunes Store or from Google Play.
  4. Launch the VisualDx app from your device and sign in using the username and password you created.

VisualDX is a clinical decision-making Internet resource, which provides instant access to concise disease information and high-quality medical images to assist in diagnosis, to direct testing, and to guide management and therapy decisions.

Rathvon to reveal EndNote tips & tricks at upcoming Effective Teacher Series lecture

On February 17, 2015, 12 noon in D1. 602, everyone is invited to come hear David Rathvon, MLS, enx7Client Experience Program Coordinator, present “EndNote X7 and Beyond”, a session on the popular citation management program, at the upcoming Effective Teacher Series lecture. Rathvon is the Library’s main technical support contact for EndNote and teaches group and individual training sessions as well as provides individual troubleshooting.

New Clinical Workstation at North Campus Branch Library

A 24/7-access Clinical Workstation is now available for usage at the North Campus Branch Library (Room ND2.300). The following designated user groups may use this station to engage in clinical documentation tasks at North Campus in a private setting:

  • Medical students (MS2, MS3, and MS4)
  • UTSW faculty & hospital staff authorized for EPIC access
  • Parkland EPIC trainer

"Prepare, Present, Promote/Preserve": supporting your academic poster from start to finish

Great! You’ve been approved to present a poster at a conference, forum, or other event. Your Library can help you every step of the way.

PREPARE
Did you know the Library provides design assistance for academic posters? Jane Scott, the Library’s Design and Promotion Specialist, is available to help you! To schedule a free individual consultation or group class, go to the Library’s Personal/Group Training Request page and select “Designing Your Best Academic Poster” in the list of topics.

PRESENT
Need to practice for your presentation? Reserve the Library’s Presentation Practice Room (Room E2.408) on the Main Floor of the South Campus Library. Practice your synopsis and talking points or invite your peers for some group feedback.  A dry erase sign-up board is available for advance reservation requests on a weekly basis.

PROMOTE & PRESERVE
What do you do with that poster after the event is over? Well, instead of rolling it up to store on a shelf or attaching a large file to an email when someone asks for a copy, consider this alternative—deposit the digital version into the Poster Center collection in the UT Southwestern Institutional Repository, which will provide the following benefits to students, researchers, faculty, or other staff at UT Southwestern:

  • Wider access to scholarly output beyond journal articles with your university affiliation
  • Easy citation or referral of an item through a permanent identifier and online link
  • Additional discoverability and preservation options through metadata and archives processes
  • The deposit of multiple files, if needed (e.g., abstract, working design, completed poster, session handout, and more)

You can deposit the poster directly, have someone deposit it on your behalf, or transfer the file to Library staff for deposit. Access to the item can also be restricted until after a specific conference, forum, or other event is completed.

New year, new address: ACC.org to replace CardioSource.org

accEffective January 1, 2015, the American College of Cardiology’s (ACC) new website (ACC.org) will replace the existing site (CardioSource.org). Current UT Southwestern users with personal accounts need to know the following:

  • All users will be required to log in the first time they visit the new ACC.org.
  • Your current CardioSource.org username and password will remain the same.
  • If you use the “Remember Me” function on CardioSource.org and do not enter your username and password each time you log in, we recommend that you verify your password by following these instructions.

The new ACC.org will offer many exciting features, including more intuitive search capabilities, improved navigation, and front page access to the Journal of the American College of Cardiology and guidelines.
