Experiencing delays with SciFinder? Find out why.

Since July 2009, SciFinder has been gradually phasing out its old platform by reducing the number of available seats, while simultaneously promoting the new web-only platform with 27 seats. Due to this gradual seat reduction, delays on the old platform are occurring more often with a lack of increased activity on the new web-only platform.
Effective July 5, 2010, only four (4) seats will be available on the old platform, as SciFinder continues transition to the web-only platform. Your Library would like to encourage any individuals who are still using the old platform to switch to the new web-only platform. As of September 1, 2010, access to SciFinder will only be available via the new web-only platform.
For technical assistance with registration or web access, please email Curtis Wright.
For questions about SciFinder, please contact Helen Mayo by email or by phone at 214-648-2528.

Managing bibliographies for NIH grants is easier with new mandatory My NCBI account

NIH grant holders know that manually entering citations into eRA Commons can be difficult and confusing, but on July 23, 2010, manual entry is going away! The NIH has found a more efficient, accurate, and easier way for eRA Commons users to manage their professional bibliographies, associate publications with their grant awards, and ensure compliance with the NIH Public Access Policy.
eRA Commons users are now required to sign up for a free My NCBI account from the National Center for Biotechnology Information. This account will allow you to import citation information from PubMed, PubMed Central, and NIH Manuscript Submission System (NIHMS), as well as helping you keep track of NIH Public Access Policy compliance by color-coding the articles according to their status in the NIHMS. Principal Investigators (PIs) will also be able to use their My NCBI accounts to delegate the responsibility of updating their bibliographies to assistants.
What Do I Have to Do?
1. Establish a My NCBI account, if PI does not already have one.
2. PI must link the My NCBI account to his/her eRA Commons account.
3. As of July 23, 2010, Commons will no longer support manual entry of citations. All new citations must be added through My NCBI accounts.
4. As of October 22, 2010, all citations previously entered manually into Commons will be removed from the Commons system. Therefore, move citations into the My NCBI account so they will show up on the PI’s professional bibliography and can be associated with future annual progress reports.
Please see the official NIH notice for more information and step-by-step help for setting up and using a My NCBI account.

Ovid Users: Important changes to your personal account

The UT Southwestern Library will be changing how we handle existing Ovid accounts in order to better serve you. If you currently save searches in one or more Ovid databases or regularly receive Ovid email alerts, you will need to create a new personal account to continue using these services.
Note: You are ONLY required to create a personal account if you save searches or use email alerts. You will need VPN or EXProxy to log into your personal accounts when off-campus.
Once you have created a new personal account, we will be able to move your saved searches and alerts from your existing account to your new account. To take advantage of this offer, please send an email to libwebmaster@utsouthwestern.edu by July 15th that includes the following:

  • Your existing username
  • Your new username

Please allow up to one week for your request to be completed. You can access both accounts until July 15th. However, after July 15th, you will ONLY be able to access your new account.
If you have any further questions, please contact Farrah Omar by email or at 214-648-9190 or consult your Library’s Ovid FAQ.

Library Intra-Campus Delivery Service (LIDS) brings Library materials to you

The Library Intra-Campus Delivery Service (LIDS) provides free delivery of Library materials to UT Southwestern faculty and staff offices on campus. Items for delivery include:

  • Books owned by the Library that are eligible for check-out
  • Books, journals articles, etc. requested on InterLibrary Loan (ILL) from another library

To request delivery via LIDS:

  • Click on InterLibrary Loan (ILLiad), which is located on the left sidebar under “Library Services” on the Library Web site.
  • Enter your ILLiad username and password.
  • On the next page, click on “New Request.”
  • Enter the appropriate information.
  • At the “How would you like us to deliver this item?” box, select “Hand Delivery” from the drop-down menu.

Some tips:

  • A Library card is required for access to ILLiad.
  • Students and residents/fellows are not eligible for delivery service.
  • If a book, article, etc. must be obtained from another library, there is a $3.50 charge for regular service and $15.00 for rush service.
  • Faculty or staff who only want a book if it is in the Library collection must put “DO NOT BORROW” in the “Notes” field of the request. (To determine if a book is in the Library collection, check the Library’s catalog for print books as well as the Electronic Books page.)
  • Enter the room number for delivery in the “Notes” field. If no room number is given, staff will call to verify the location.
  • A signature is required upon delivery. If no one is available to sign, the package will be returned to the Library and delivery will be attempted the next regular delivery day.

For more information on LIDS, contact Donna Terlisner or call 214-648-2002.

Help DISD homeless children: Donate school supplies at Library

You can help homeless children by donating school supplies at a drop box in the South Campus (main) Library or on North Campus at NC8.308 until July 30th. Backpacks, notebooks, crayons, calculators, and pencils are all needed. Personal items such as hand sanitizers, tissues, gently-used school clothes, and shoes are also welcome.
This donation drive is being organized by the Graduate Student Organization (GSO) to benefit homeless children in the Dallas Independent School District (DISD). Currently, there are about 4,000 DISD students without any sort of permanent living arrangement. For this drive, the GSO is working with the district’s Community Relations and Homeless Education Program departments. The GSO organizers for the drive are Tracy Diaz and Bethany Gray.
